Black Friday is the biggest shopping spree of the year. It is a day full of considerable discounts and deals that is now known all around the world. Even in the Czech Republic, Black Friday is then a unique opportunity to buy new things at reasonable prices. But why is this Friday called “Black Friday” and how was this tradition born actually?
History and origin of Black Friday
Black Friday originated in the United States. It is traditionally held after Thanksgiving, that is a major North American holiday. To explain the origin of the term “Black Friday”, we must go back to the 1960s. At that time, the Philadelphia police started using these words to describe the chaos on the streets caused by the rush of shoppers who always flooded the stores after Thanksgiving.
However, over time "black" took a positive meaning - from the perspective of the stores themselves, Black Friday became a time when they went from red data (loss) to black data (profit).
Discounts that entice pre-Christmas shopping
Nowadays, Black Friday symbolises a start of the pre-Christmas shopping season. During that time, the shops offer special discounts to attract as many customers as possible. In the US, the stores are practically full to bursting on this day and many people are able to wait in long queues or even spend the night outside the stores - just to be sure to get their shopping for the best prices.
Thanks to the internet and the growing e-shop popularity, this “shopping feast” has spread all over the world and into the online space. Of course, the Czech shops and e-shops are not left behind and are happy to join in too.
Originally, Black Friday was a single day full of discounts, but today it usually extends to the whole weekend, or even the whole November. The advantage of this is that you do not have to stress yourself and shop in a hurry - you have more time to think about the deals and compare them well.
Be careful: Not everything is as convenient as it seems
Many stores are one-upping each other with the deals during Black Friday, so it is necessary to stay cautious. The prices are sometimes deliberately increased just before Black Friday to make the goods look cheaper when they return to their original price. Therefore, it is a good idea to compare the prices, e.g., on the price comparison sites, to make sure it is a real saving.
Other unfair practices that some online shops use, include, e.g., time-limited discounts (which are only for a limited time) or fake reviews (which are not written by customers but by the sellers themselves). So, it is always a good idea to check everything thoroughly. A moment attention can be worth it, and you will get a real bargain.
How to stay smart at shopping and not get tempted?
The right approach to Black Friday can help you save money on the things you really need for your family. However, avoid impulsive purchases that you might regret next day. Remember that you do not have to buy everything just because it is on sale now.
It is worth to shop wisely, not get fascinated by the advertising gimmicks, and focus on proven brands and retailers. Stay calm, think about what you want and what you need, and Black Friday can become a pleasant day when discounts can make you and your family happy.
